Four skills ship here, but they are not four different capabilities. context7-cli is the setup and management skill — it wraps the ctx7 CLI to install skills, configure the MCP server, and search or fetch documentation from the command line. The other three — context7-docs, context7-mcp, and find-docs — describe the same job in near-identical language: fetch up-to-date documentation for any library, framework, SDK, or cloud service the moment a user names one. That reads as one behavior registered three separate times under different names and trigger phrasings, not three distinct features.

Context7 works two ways: install the CLI-and-skills path with npx ctx7 setup, which needs no MCP server, or register https://mcp.context7.com/mcp directly with any MCP-capable client. It is aimed at anyone whose agent invents an API or writes against a year-old version of a library; it has less to offer if the libraries you use are obscure enough that Context7's index doesn't cover them, since the package can only return what its backend has indexed.

The part that does the actual work is not in this repository. Context7's own disclaimer says the API backend, the parsing engine, and the crawling engine are private and are not part of this repository — what's here is the MCP server's source and the CLI. The documentation content itself is described as community-contributed, and Context7 says it cannot guarantee the accuracy or completeness of what gets returned.

An API key is recommended, not required. The free tier works without one; the readme's own note is that a key from context7.com/dashboard buys higher rate limits, and one of the four skills is classed in our data as needing an account key rather than running out of the box.
