What is Ahrefs MCP

Ahrefs MCP lets AI agents securely access the Ahrefs API and enrich their answers with real Ahrefs data. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard that allows AI tools to connect with third-party APIs in a secure, consistent way. In our case, it connects AI tools with Ahrefs, enabling things like this:

Ahrefs provides a hosted MCP server that allows users with a Lite plan or higher to connect their Ahrefs account to supported AI tools. Once connected, your setup is synced and available across all devices linked to your personal or company account.

Keys and authorization

When you connect Ahrefs MCP to an AI agent:

• You’ll see an authorization consent screen.

• Once approved, the connection will appear in your account with a dedicated API key (tagged with MCP scope).

• Workspace admins can set a monthly API unit limit for each key in the API keys report to prevent over-usage.

You can also:

• Manually generate an MCP key in your account and use it in your AI agent’s configuration.

• Enterprise customers may also connect with their API keys.

Terms of use

The Ahrefs external MCP server is intended for use with MCP-compatible AI clients (such as ChatGPT, Claude, and similar assistants) for interactive, AI-driven workflows.

Using the external MCP endpoint via custom scripts, bridges, or standalone HTTP/JSON-RPC clients is unsupported and not permitted. The external MCP server is not a general-purpose programmatic API.

API limits and usage

The remote MCP server is available on paid plans starting from Lite.

• Each plan has a maximum number of rows per request that an AI agent can access.

• Each plan also comes with a limited amount of monthly API units. The higher your plan tier, the more units are included. Enterprise customers can purchase additional unit add-ons if needed.

• When a third-party app makes an API call on your behalf, it consumes API units from your monthly allowance — the same way as direct API usage.
