Turn documents into something your assistant can actually read.

PDFs, spreadsheets, slide decks and web pages reach the assistant as Markdown with headings and tables intact, ready to summarize or compare. The output is meant for AI and text tools, not a polished human-readable copy.

What it is

A small MCP server from Microsoft for MarkItDown, its Python tool that converts files to Markdown for AI use. Give it a web address, a local file path or inline data, and it returns the content as Markdown, keeping headings, lists, tables and links. It is meant for local use with agents you trust, and it is still an alpha release.

What you get

  • Any http, https, file or data address converted to Markdown with one tool
  • Document structure kept: headings, lists, tables and links
  • Through MarkItDown: PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML, ZIP archives, images, audio and YouTube links

Requirements

Python 3.10 or newer, installed with pip install markitdown-mcp, or a Docker image you build yourself from the package's Dockerfile. Microsoft recommends Docker for Claude Desktop; mount a folder if you want it to read local files. No account or key, and no sign-in of its own: it can read any file and any network address the user running it can reach. Keep it on your own machine.
