Shrinks a large AI model to about a quarter of the memory so it fits on a smaller graphics card and runs roughly three times faster, protecting the few numbers inside that matter most so quality barely drops.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Shrink a 7B-70B parameter model to fit on a single consumer GPU.
  • Speed up serving an instruction-tuned or chat model in production with vLLM.
  • Quantize a model against custom domain text instead of the default calibration set.
  • Split a 4-bit model across multiple GPUs when it's still too large for one.

NOT FOR

  • AutoAWQ is deprecated for new projects; use vLLM's llm-compressor or MLX-LM instead.
  • On older GPUs without Marlin support, GPTQ has wider ecosystem support instead.
  • For QLoRA fine-tuning or zero-calibration quantization, use bitsandbytes instead.
