Describes what is in a photo and answers questions about it in plain language — it joins an existing image model to an existing language model with a small bridge, so neither of them has to be retrained.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Generate a natural-language caption for a photo without any task-specific training.
  • Answer an open-ended question about the contents of an image.
  • Score how well a caption matches a given image for image-text matching.
  • Build a text-to-image search engine by comparing extracted image and text features.
  • Run inference in 8-bit or 4-bit to fit a larger BLIP-2 variant into less GPU memory.

NOT FOR

  • For instruction-following multimodal chat, use LLaVA or BLIP-2's successor InstructBLIP instead.
  • For production multimodal chat, use a proprietary model like GPT-4V or Claude 3 instead.
  • For simple image-text similarity without generation, use CLIP instead.
  • For few-shot visual learning, use Flamingo instead.
