Eight thinking techniques from creativity research, applied to computer science and AI: combining ideas from distant fields, reframing the problem, reasoning by analogy, dropping a constraint everyone assumes, and more. It aims at new research directions rather than small extensions of existing work.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Borrow a working idea from another field, such as physics or biology, and test whether it carries over.
  • Reframe a problem, the way PageRank turned web search into a graph problem.
  • Drop an assumption everyone makes and see what becomes possible.
  • Run a 90-minute ideation session in four timed phases.

NOT FOR

  • Running a brainstorming session from start to finish: the brainstorming-research-ideas skill.
  • Carrying out a well-defined project: the domain skills.
  • Literature reviews.
