Instead of hand-writing prompts, you declare what goes in and what should come out — then a search over your own examples and your own scoring finds the wording that actually performs best.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Wrap a single LM call in a typed input-to-output signature instead of a hand-written prompt.
  • Chain retrieval and generation into a multi-step module, such as a RAG or multi-hop pipeline.
  • Run an optimizer like BootstrapFewShot or MIPRO to improve a module's prompt from examples.
  • Swap the underlying LM — Claude, GPT-4, or a local Ollama model — without rewriting the module.
  • Score a module against a validation set and compare it before and after optimization.

NOT FOR

  • For a quick one-off prototype, plain manual prompting is simpler than this.
  • For a simple chain built on existing tooling, use LangChain instead.
