An open model you can run on your own machine that looks at a picture and talks about it — you ask what is in the photo, and then keep asking follow-up questions about the same one.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Have a multi-turn conversation about the contents of a single image.
  • Answer a specific visual question, like what objects a photo shows, in plain language.
  • Generate a detailed caption describing everything happening in a scene.
  • Answer questions about a document by reading it as an image rather than as text.

NOT FOR

  • Counting exact numbers of objects or reading small text in an image — accuracy drops noticeably there.
  • Needing the highest possible visual quality through a hosted API — GPT-4V outperforms it there.
  • Simple zero-shot image classification with no conversation needed — CLIP alone is enough.
