Teaching a model what people prefer takes a whole cluster running in lockstep — one part writes answers, another scores them, another retrains on the scores — and this is the machinery that coordinates it, at about twice the speed of the older option.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Align a large language model with human feedback using PPO, GRPO, or DPO.
  • Fine-tune a 7B-70B parameter model with reinforcement learning across a GPU cluster.
  • Speed up PPO response generation during training with vLLM inference acceleration.
  • Fix GPU memory exhaustion by giving the actor, critic, and reward models separate GPUs.
  • Pick an RL algorithm based on how much training stability and manual tuning you want.

NOT FOR

  • Skip this for single-node training with a simpler API; use TRL instead.
  • Skip this to train 671B-parameter models; use ByteDance's veRL framework instead.
  • Skip this if you want training tightly integrated with the DeepSpeed ecosystem.
