Inside every modern AI model, one step compares every word against every other word, and that step is what devours the memory; this swaps it for a version that needs ten to twenty times less and returns exactly the same answers.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Fit longer sequences in GPU memory by replacing standard attention with Flash Attention.
  • Speed up transformer training or inference two to four times on sequences over 512 tokens.
  • Add multi-query or sliding-window attention for more advanced generation setups.
  • Diagnose accuracy loss by checking that inputs use float16 or bfloat16, not float32.

NOT FOR

  • Skip this for sequences under 256 tokens, where the overhead outweighs the gain.
  • Skip this for CPU inference; use memory-efficient attention instead, which needs no GPU.
  • Skip this if you need more attention variants than raw speed; try xFormers instead.
