Loads a large language model in 8-bit or 4-bit precision instead of full precision, cutting GPU memory use by 50 to 75 percent with little accuracy loss.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Fit a model that would otherwise overflow your GPU's memory by quantizing it to 4-bit.
  • Fine-tune a 70B model on a single 24GB GPU using QLoRA.
  • Cut optimizer memory by 75 percent during training with an 8-bit Adam optimizer.
  • Recover lost accuracy by switching from 4-bit to 8-bit or enabling double quantization.

NOT FOR

  • Use GPTQ or AWQ instead for faster production inference serving.
  • Use GGUF with llama.cpp instead for CPU-only inference.
  • Use FP8 instead on H100 GPUs, where hardware FP8 support is faster.
  • Skip this when accuracy matters most and GPU memory isn't a constraint.
