A single unit inside a model fires for several unrelated things at once, which is why nobody can read it directly; this pulls those tangled signals apart into a much larger set where each one stands for one recognisable idea.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Find which learned feature fires for a specific concept, like a language or code pattern.
  • Train a custom sparse autoencoder on a chosen layer of an open model.
  • Steer a model's generation by adding a chosen feature's direction to its activations.
  • Diagnose a high dead-feature ratio by adding an L1 warm-up during training.

NOT FOR

  • Use TransformerLens directly instead for basic activation analysis without training an SAE.
  • Use pyvene or TransformerLens instead for causal intervention experiments.
  • Use direct activation engineering instead for production-grade steering.
