A site's behind-the-scenes code — the part that talks to a database or an AI model — runs on Vercel's machines, charged for the time it actually spends working rather than by the server.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Choose between Node.js, Python, Bun, Rust or a Docker image for one backend.
  • Stream AI-generated tokens or server-sent events straight from a normal function.
  • Run a WebSocket or Socket.IO server directly on Vercel, no third-party service needed.
  • Keep a function alive for up to 30 minutes for a long-running task.
  • Bring your own Docker image for a backend that needs system libraries like FFmpeg.
  • Schedule a function to run automatically on a recurring cron schedule.

NOT FOR

  • Picking the Edge runtime for new code — Node.js now covers every case Edge used to help with.
  • Work that needs to run longer than 30 minutes or survive a crash — use Vercel Workflow instead.
