Making changes to a Contentstack site's structure on a copy first, then pointing the live site at that copy in a single move — and pointing it straight back if something goes wrong.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Decide on a branching strategy for making schema changes without touching the live site.
  • Understand which Contentstack modules are branch-specific and which are shared globally.
  • Set up an alias-based deployment so production can switch branches with zero downtime.
  • Roll back a bad deployment by reassigning the production alias to the previous branch.
  • Wire branches and aliases into a CI/CD pipeline for content and schema changes.

NOT FOR

  • Creating, deleting or merging branches and aliases directly — it only advises, you make the change.
  • Using a branch as a permanent, long-lived environment — use an actual environment for that.
