When an automatic test run fails, this says whose fault it is: the developer's own change, something already broken on the main branch, or a test that fails at random. If it was the main branch, it names the change, its author, and whether a fix has landed.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Find out whether the failed checks on your pull request are actually caused by your change.
  • Pin down which merged change broke the main branch, and when it started and stopped.
  • Tell a test that fails at random apart from one that fails every single time.
  • Get a list of everything failing in the test runs right now, most urgent first.
  • Explain why a change was held up in the merge queue even though its own checks passed.

NOT FOR

  • Test runs that feel slow or costly, or pull requests stuck waiting (use diagnosing-ci-and-merge-bottlenecks).
  • Saving the findings as a dashboard or chart (use turning-engineering-analytics-into-insights).
