The groundwork shared by PostHog's metric-building skills: how to write a business number down once — inside PostHog or in dbt — so every chart and dashboard uses that one version instead of working it out again.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Decide whether a metric should live as a saved query inside PostHog or as a dbt model.
  • Check whether the company already has an approved definition of a number before building another.
  • Turn a slow, often-used saved query into a stored table that refreshes on a schedule.
  • Lay out a starter dbt project that reads the tables you sync out of PostHog.
  • Label a finished model's columns and register it so other people find and reuse it.

NOT FOR

  • Expecting PostHog to run your dbt models — there is no dbt connector, so dbt runs on your own setup.
  • Full lookup-table design such as country or plan lists — that is the modeling-dimension-tables skill.
