The day-to-day guide to managing PostHog's scouts, the automated watchers that file reports on a project: how to hand them a job, act on what they report, and steer them until what they flag matches what your team cares about.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Find out why scouts seem idle — not enrolled, paused, or set to run without writing anything.
  • Decide whether a watching job needs a new scout or just a note to an existing one.
  • Dismiss a wrong report with a reason the scout will read and learn from.
  • Point a scout at something specific for this week only, with a note that expires.
  • Check what a scout actually changed in a project during one of its runs.
  • Review the whole fleet every few weeks and pause scouts on areas the team no longer uses.

NOT FOR

  • Writing or editing a scout's own instructions — use authoring-scouts.
  • Working through individual reports in the inbox — that is inbox-exploration.
  • A one-off question you want answered now — query the data directly instead.
