You cannot make Go code faster without measuring it first — this is the measuring: timings you can trust, where the time actually goes, and a check that catches the change that slowed things down.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Write and run Go benchmarks with b.Loop() and get statistically sound timing results.
  • Profile a hot path with pprof to see exactly where CPU or memory time goes.
  • Compare before-and-after benchmark runs with benchstat to prove a change made a difference.
  • Set up CI benchmark regression detection so a pull request can't silently slow the codebase.
  • Correlate production Prometheus metrics with a recent deploy when live traffic behaves oddly.

NOT FOR

  • Does not cover applying optimization patterns once a bottleneck is identified.
  • Not for enabling or securing pprof endpoints on a running production service.
