Automatic formatters settle how Go code is spaced; this settles the rest — where to break a long line, when to flatten a nested if, when a comment earns its place.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Decide where to break a long line or a multi-argument call at a semantic boundary.
  • Choose between := and var so the declaration itself signals a zero value.
  • Flatten a nested if/else chain into early returns and a switch statement.
  • Extract a wall of three or more && / || checks into named boolean variables.
  • Review a pull request for style issues that gofmt and linters don't catch.

NOT FOR

  • Not for identifier naming conventions such as package or variable names.
  • Not for golangci-lint configuration or automated formatting setup.
  • Not for godoc comment conventions or other documentation content.
