Deciding how content gets filed into categories in Contentstack — a proper tree of categories, or looser tags and labels — and then how a site pulls back everything sitting under one branch of it.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Decide between taxonomy, tags, labels or a references-based content type for categorization.
  • Design a term hierarchy for product categories or geographic regions.
  • Filter delivered entries by a taxonomy term and its descendants or ancestors.
  • Work out whether taxonomy terms can be localized on the current plan.

NOT FOR

  • Classifying content with freeform, ungoverned labels — use tags for that instead.
  • Organizing content only for internal CMS use — use labels rather than taxonomy.
  • Building a rich category landing page with its own layout — model that as a content type instead.
