Azure Local puts Microsoft's cloud services on machines in your own building; this covers looking after it from planning and installing the cluster to updating it, running workloads on it, and fixing it when something fails.

SCOPE

USE FOR

Plan and install Azure Local: 1-16 machines hyperconverged, up to 64 disaggregated, or a rack-aware cluster.
Apply the regular updates to an Azure Local cluster you already run.
Create virtual machines, disks and Kubernetes clusters on your on-site Azure Local setup.
Set up software-defined networking, firewall rules and load balancers on Azure Local.
Work out why an Azure Local install, update or workload failed.

NOT FOR

Virtual machines or Kubernetes in Azure's public cloud; azure-compute and azure-kubernetes cover those.
Multi-rack, rack-scale installations; they follow different procedures in azure-local-multi-rack.

When to Use This Skill

Use for Azure Local, Azure Stack HCI, Azure Local VMs, AKS on Azure Local, AKS hybrid, SDN, lifecycle updates, disconnected sites, or troubleshooting. Covers standard deployments (1-16 node hyperconverged, up to 64 disaggregated) and rack-aware clusters.

Do not use for cloud VM or public AKS guidance, or for multi-rack (rack scale) deployments — those use a separate control plane and procedure set. Hand off to the azure-local-multi-rack skill.

MCP Tools

Azure Local has no dedicated MCP namespace. Use generic Azure MCP tools: mcp_azure_mcp_extension_cli_generate (ARG/CLI inventory), mcp_azure_mcp_monitor (needs Log Analytics), mcp_azure_mcp_resourcehealth (partial; not local cluster health), mcp_azure_mcp_documentation (pass the user's version when known).

Scope and limitations: mcp-and-cli-tools.

Workflow

Confirm deployment scale. If the user mentions multi-rack, aggregation racks, Network Fabric Controller, Cluster Manager, or Microsoft.NetworkCloud resources, stop and use the azure-local-multi-rack skill instead.

Read the matched workflow first and use docs-map. Start read-only. Ask before updates, deletes, reimages, network changes, VM power/delete operations, or Arc bridge/custom location changes.

Error Handling

Scale unknown	Ask whether the deployment is standard or multi-rack before giving procedures.
Multi-rack detected	Hand off to the `azure-local-multi-rack` skill; these procedures do not apply.
Version unknown	Ask for the Azure Local version, or use latest docs.
Risky change detected	Stop and follow safety-rules.
No local access	Stay with Azure control-plane checks only.

Run this outside your AI tool, using Node.js 22.20.0 or newer. Skills CLI 1.7.2 skips skill selection; prompts cancel installation without an interactive terminal. If choosing Project when asked about installation scope, open your project's folder before running this.

Install checklist

Check selected tools if a picker appears; Claude Code may be unchecked under Additional agents. ↑/↓ moves, Space toggles selections, Enter confirms.
Without a tool picker, check Installing to: for your intended tool. Stop if it names a different tool.
If asked, choose Symlink (Recommended) for shared files or Copy to all agents for separate copies; review the summary before confirming installation.
Install the find-skills skill? defaults to Yes, adding another skill for all projects. Choose No if you don't want that extra installation.

Skills CLI 1.7.2 sends install data to skills.sh by default, including the source, skill names, target tools and file details; GitHub sources are reported only when GitHub confirms the repository is public, while other remote sources can also be reported. Confirmed-public GitHub sources also trigger a security-audit request. Before installing, set the environment variable DO_NOT_TRACK=1 or DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 to disable both.
