Every outside package a Go project pulls in is a long-term commitment; this is how to decide whether to take one on, upgrade it without breaking the build, and check it for known vulnerabilities.

WHEN TO USE

SCOPE

USE FOR

  • Decide whether a new dependency is worth adding before running go get.
  • Upgrade dependencies safely with go get -u=patch, then verify with tests and govulncheck.
  • Resolve a version conflict with a replace, exclude, or retract directive.
  • Pin CI tool versions like golangci-lint or benchstat with Go 1.24+ tool directives.
  • Set up a go.work workspace for developing a library alongside its example app.

NOT FOR

  • Not for fixing an exploitable vulnerability once govulncheck finds one in your code.
  • Not for wiring Dependabot or Renovate update bots into CI workflows.
